WHY A-GRADE TEAK
Teak is one of the few timbers naturally suited for outdoor furniture. Because it grows slowly, mature teak develops a dense grain structure and rich natural oils that make it exceptionally durable outdoors.
These natural qualities help protect the timber from moisture, decay and pests, keep the surface smooth to the touch, and allow it to age beautifully over time.
Why is A-grade teak highly valued?
Teak grows slowly, only around 1cm in diameter each year. True A-grade teak comes only from mature logs of around 35 years or older, and on average just 20% of the log qualifies as A-grade. Its rarity is what makes it so highly valued.
NOT ALL TEAK IS THE SAME
Teak timber is commonly graded into A, B and C grades, depending on where the wood comes from within the tree.
True A-grade teak is cut from the mature inner heartwood, where the timber is richest in natural oil and most dense in grain. Lower grades come from the outer layers of the log, where the timber is lighter in colour, lower in oil content, and less durable outdoors.
HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE

A – GRADE TEAK
A-grade teak comes from the mature centre of the log, giving it an even honey-brown colour, dense grain, and a smooth, uniform appearance.

LOWER GRADE TEAK (B, C – GRADE)
Lower grade teak includes the lighter outer sapwood, which creates a patchier look and is often oiled or finished to disguise the uneven colour.
| Property | A-Grade Teak | Lower Grade Teak |
|---|---|---|
| COLOUR | Even and consistent | Uneven with lighter sapwood visible |
| PART OF THE TREE | Mature inner heartwood | Outer layers / sapwood |
| NATURAL OIL CONTENT | High | Lower |
| SURFACE FINISH | No finish required | Often finished with oil or stain |
| MAINTENANCE | No regular oiling required | Usually needs re-oiling at least once a year |
| SURFACE FEEL | Smooth over time | Can become rougher over time |
| WEATHERING | Ages into an even silver-grey patina | Can weather less evenly |
| PEST RESISTANCE | Naturally more resistant due to dense grain and high oil content | Softer and lower in oil, making it more vulnerable |
| OUTDOOR DURABILITY | Naturally suited for long-term outdoor use | Less naturally durable outdoors |
INSIST ON A-GRADE TEAK. SIMPLY THE BEST FOR OUTDOOR USE.
